I fully agree with you! The current Map component only accepts BMP files. This is the higher resolution I have achieved. You can avoid using the world map texture by entering the Map configuration, press the Texture button and delete the file name, press Ok. Now select the World Map layer and check both options below. You will see the world map in green anb blue color which looks nice.
